Note: This post is one of a series about our visit to New River Gorge and Bridge in late October 2018. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of color in the trees then. For details of the New River National River and links to other posts, please see New River Gorge and Bridge (Overview).
Grandview offers some of the best scenery of the New River Gorge National River and the overlooks offer a beautiful view of a large horseshoe bend in the New River, from a two-level platform (one is accessible while the other is bare rock). As described in the introduction to New River Gorge and Bridge, the Main Overlook is 1400 feet above the river. The Main Overlook, a 0.1 mile stroll from the parking lot, was a perfect location to photograph the full moon rising over the river when we were there, which is why there were four photographers (all with good cameras, long lenses and tripods) the evening we went (actually the evening before full moon).
For this purpose, I had rented a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 L lens. This lens is intended for a full-frame camera, but when mounted on my camera, it is equivalent to a 112-320 mm f/2.8 lens.
