Ivy Covered Church

Last month (June 2019) we had a gorgeous sunny and cool day so Beverly and I went on a ‘field trip’ to visit some places of interest in Nelson County and take some pictures. Her daughter had forwarded a photograph of a Gothic ivy covered church through Facebook. That photograph, taken by Shutterbatte Photography, inspired me to photograph it, too. The church is the Rehoboth Mennonite Church near Schuyler, VA. Known as the “rock Church,” it was built around 1920. Originally, it was the Christ Episcopal Church before becoming a Mennonite Church in the 1960s.

As I was taking pictures, I couldn’t get over the size of the ivy vine stems where they came out of the ground – some of them looked to be 3 or 4 inches in diameter.

The featured image is an HDR image made from three identical images taken at different exposures. I also used a circular polarizing filter to increase color saturation and contrast. (For an explanation of these techniques, please see the Definitions page.)
