We have attended a number of musical theater performances at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre in Wytheville, VA (www.wohlfahrthaus.com). They put on a good show, the meal is good and reasonably priced. For our first visit, we researched what else is in the area that we would appreciate; one of those was Big Walker Lookout and the BW Country Store (www.bigwalkerlookout.com). The lookout is a 100-foot observation tower on US Rt. 52 at the top of Big Walker Mountain in Bland County, Virginia and the country store is immediately adjacent. The lookout provides a 360° view of Big Walker Mountain and the valleys on both sides. The Country Store features local pantry goods, handmade goods from local Artisans and Crafters, books by local writers, and delicious hand-dipped ice cream.
The view from the area adjacent to the country store is superb, but since we were there in mid-afternoon in the summer, the lighting wasn’t optimum so we didn’t utilize the observation tower and decided to return some other time. Our next visit was late in the afternoon on October 18, 2017. The Country Store (and tower) were already closed but there was nice light across the distant mountains. As we were leaving, we noticed that the sunlight was reflecting off the bottom of the tower stairs so we took several pictures of the tower. This photo was taken at 6:28 PM, sunset was at 6:42 PM. Note that some of the sunset photos taken later that day are posted at Big Walker Mountain Sunset.
