Layers Upon Layers

By Laurie

One of the photographic subjects that attracts my attention is layers of rock (an example of that is Sideling Hill, published this past June). During my 2015 National Parks vacation, I also took many photos of rock layers, some of which I hope to include here someday.

This photo of crumbling rock layers was taken in Letchworth State Park in New York. It is near where Wolf Creek flows into the Genesee River toward the southern end of the park, but north of the three water falls. I was drawn to this area of crumbling layers of rock while photographing something else.

The walls of the Genesee River Gorge are sedimentary in origin and primarily consist of shale, siltstone, and sandstone. Please see the link in Additional Information for more details.

In Additional Photos (below) there are other photos of rock layers in the Genesee River Gorge in Letchworth State Park.
