Recently, I have been interested in photographing objects I identify as ‘Distressed’ (as in abandoned or forlorn – see Lonely Schoolhouse and Luxury Vacation Cabin, as examples) and this also fits that description.
Early in May this year, we visited some of Beverly’s family in New York. While we were there, we saw this abandoned trailer in the woods. As I enjoy doing, we stopped and I took several photos. Our timing was fortunate as the trailer is much less visible once the trees and brush are in leaf. In the second photo (below), there is a cleared area, like a driveway, leading from the road to the trailer, although it was overgrown and there were no noticeable tire marks.
From what we have learned, the original intent when the trailer was moved to this location (about 30 years ago?) was to use it for a hunting camp, but it was never set up. In Google Street View (image capture July 2009), the trailer is visible when looking up through the cleared area but not when you are beside it.
This is most likely a 1951 Stewart Coach trailer. I have not been able to confirm the year but I’ve found pictures of a 1954 Stewart Coach trailer and the lines are identical. In the early 1950’s, these were identified as Trailers, not Travel Trailers. They were built for road travel and were pulled with the family car. The larger ones like this were also known as House Trailers since they were large enough to live in, but were not designed to be a permanent structure as mobile homes are today.
